Lawrence Bean - Senior Mechanical Engineer, son of Ron Bean owner of an Engineering Workshop at St Dunstans, Canterbury was to follow his fathers trade running an Engineering Business and gentleman farmer in Lyminge
Through contacts by accident Lawrence became Mechanical Engineer, initially on KING Radio ultimately a Director and Senior of Radio 390
Lawrence brought the WWII Gardner LW Generators back into use, he fitted a more efficient and economical Lister Blackstone Generator
Lawrence along with Radio Engineer John Glendinning came up with the idea of pre-recorded programme in early 1967, this drastically reduced manning levels and running costs
Lawrence Bean hoisted from 'Mullard' F19 onto Radio 390's Red Sands Fort on 29th December 1965
(Kent Messenger, 31st December 1965)
Lawrence Bean aged 10 had befriended Bill Seymore, a former WWII Radio and Radar Technician owned a business in Canterbury known as SERED (South Eastern Radio Electronic Distributors) with a fleet of mobile engineers based at 'Salum House', St Georges, Canterbury. Bill, shared his vast knowledge with Lawrence has remained a firm family friend
'Salum House' was redeveloped with the department store Riceman's built on the site, after demolition the plot is occupied by the 'Whitefriars' parade of shops facing the bus station
Bill Seymore was Bob Le-Roi's father-in-law, a competent guitarist he ran Sovereign Records and Recording Studio's from the same building, mostly recording bands of the day. He built his own valve mixing desks and column speakers, the later were made using lots of old television loudspeakers, his principle being better to have lots of speakers moving a little than one big driver moving a lot!
One contract Bob relished included providing public address and recording of the Diocesan Conferences at Canterbury Cathedral, this entailed putting masses of his own loudspeakers on 100 volt line above the Nave, large Vortexion valve amplifiers and huge Phillips open Reel Tape Machines set-up below
When Radio 390 closed down many tapes from the Fort were deposited at SERED, a few tapes were rescued containing pre-recordings of the announcers final closedown messages
John Budd - Worked for Maurice Gething as Service Engineer at Guilhall Camera's/Tape Recorders, he worked on the Fort as needed. Ron Leach who had his own workshops at his Hythe home took over shop service work
John Davies - Mechanical Engineer assisted building the wooden box studio's on the top level of Gun Tower 3
Vic Davis and his wife Joyce lived at Chestfield, Whitstable, owner/skipper of the 'Mullard' F19 the Fort Tender from 1964 - 1967
Joyce collected and dispatched staff from Whitstable Railway Station/Whitstable Harbour
Maurice Gething - Director owner of Guildhall Cameras/Tape Recorders, 25 Guildhall Street, Folkestone from where much of Radio 390's studio equipment was sourced, including the Leigh & Doughty Mixer board manufactured in Sandgate, Folkestone (The Shop/Factory and parade of buildings long demolished)
Maurice died in late 2017, see Red Sands Relics
John Glendinning - Radio Technician, see Glendinnings - Page 2
Charlie Kent - Cook
John Latrobe - Director farmer, rally driver had interests in Brafield Car Racing Stadium and was owner of Latrobe & Company, he became a Director and discovered the Blackstone Generator. His yard was bought by Smarden Coaches, see Generation Plant
David Lye - Company Secretary a Folkestone businessman and with KING Radio suggested Ted Allbeury. David by default became MD once Ted had left for Radio 355 and stayed until Radio 390 closed
Noel's Passport (Undated) Full Image
Noel Ranken - Sales Manager
Dougie Seymore - The Handy Man, rewired all the switch gear in the Generator Room on the Searchlight Tower, see Generation Plant
Maureen Seymore - Dougie's wife often put up those making their way to and from the Fort. She was was chauffeur to the Lord Mayor of Canterbury
Brian Tyrrell of Seasalter (Whitstable) long experienced fisherman and crew on the 'Mullard' F19, see Brian Tyrrell's Page
Radio 390 North (Daily Mail, 17th June 1966)
Preparations were made for the launch of Radio 390 North from the 'Cheeta II' the ex-Radio Syd vessel loanded to Radio Caroline when their South ship 'Mi-Amigo' broke her mooring and beached at Frinton-on-Sea
The 'Cheeta II' would likely moor either in the Bristol Channel between the Cornish and Welsh coast or Liverpool Bay
Some station ident's and programes were made, and an elaborate rate card produced shown in full below, but nothing came of the proposed station
