'Richard Stocks' aka 'Stocks of Whitstable'; a brief history
The business 'Stocks of Whitstable' is today owned by Mike Marsh's family & previously traded as Richard Stocks
This information from Mike: I am absolutely amazed that no one has ever mentioned this to me in the past! I have been told that Mr Dudley Chaffey the original owner opened his Builder Supplies & Kitchen Furniture Shop in Cromwell Road in 1961. It had previously been Weatherly's the Bakers. Dudley had a daughter who married an American called Richard Stock & that's where the name of the shop came from
We have a store room at the back of the shop in Cromwell Road that was called the Joiners Shop & it was here that the whitewood kitchen furniture was made & assembled. It appears that Mr Chaffey opened a second & smaller store in Harbour Street, but I wouldn't think it lasted too long as no one seems to remember it
In 1979 at the tender age of 17 I began working in the shop, my family managed to purchase the business & site in 2002. Our son Steve joined us in 2004 when he was 16. Our older son James is a photographer
9. Flory & Black - 19/12/13 | 10. James Marsh - 19/12/13 |
It's a strange coincidence but he opened his shop in the old Harbour Street 'Stocks' with his wife Rosie now called 'Flory & Black' in 2013 where he sell his own photographs, artworks & trinkets
My wife Tracey soon followed, when she purchased the established business 'What's up Cupcake' also in Harbour Street, where she works with our future daughter in law, Steve's fiance Victoria
