* The Roy Orbison track wasn't played, as the programme concentrated on the UK hits. It was announced along with its chart position, but, interestingly, John Benson started with the word "Pretty" then faltered momentarily and said "Woman", as if he was correcting the script as he read it. "Pretty Woman" was in fact titled "Oh, Pretty Woman" and was well down the charts by this time (#42 on 26/12/64, #48 on 2/1/65 according to Record Retailer). Roy's Christmas hit "Pretty Paper" had just left the Top 10, and must have been the record on John Benson's list at #15.

Webmaster's note:
It's interesting that this pilot programme was commissioned by Radio London, yet does not reflect the station output. However, at the time of its recording, the station had only just arrived and had yet to establish its American Top 40 sound. 'Swinging UK' was presented by John Benson and included an interview with another non-offshore DJ, Dee Shenderey. John Benson was presumably chosen because of his experience in presenting weekly chart countdowns for BFBS; Dee Shenderey (now better known as songwriter Dee Shipman) presented several radio shows including Luxembourg's 'Ready Steady Radio'.

Many thanks to Alan for his painstaking research.
