David Bowie – the Knees Club's Superstar
Mary Payne explains how one KC member honoured another

David Bowie joined the Knees Club on March 18th 1966 and became member #127; a few months later, in August, another David - David Stopps - became member #338. Fast-forward a few years and Member #338 was running Aylesbury's famous music club Friars and Member #127 made several appearances at Friars that set him firmly on the road to stardom.

After Bowie's untimely death in 2016, David Stopps launched a campaign to raise funds for a statue of Bowie to enhance Aylesbury's Market Square.

After two years of dedication and hard work, the David Bowie bronze statue 'Earthly Messenger' by Andrew Sinclair was unveiled at 1400 on Sunday, March 25th 2018. What's more, it has no less than four knees!

Radio London's full photo-report of the unveiling of the incredible statue, which cleverly incorporates Bowie's numerous stage personas and plays one of his tracks on the hour, every hour, is here.

The Official Friars Aylesbury website has a photo-gallery of the unveiling and the evening concert featuring Marillion, Howard Jones, John Otway and the Dung Beatles. There are also photos on the site of Paul O'Boyle casting part of the statue.

Bucks TV has produced a short feature about the Aylesbury/Bowie connection and the Earthly Messenger statue, containing interviews with David Stopps and fans who attended Bowie's Friars gigs.

The sad report of the vandalisation of the artwork only days after its unveiling and the subsequent clean-up.
